What
is acne?
Acne is skin condition affecting almost everyone as one time or another.
It is characterized by clogged pores in the form of blackheads and whiteheads,
inflamed pimples, known as pustules, and deeper lumps or nodules. Acne
can be found anywhere on the body but is most common on the face, neck,
chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. Although it is commonly found
among teenagers, acne is not characterized by a specific age group, its’
painful and embarrassing effects are a concern for many adults throughout
their lives.
This skin condition can have a cosmetic and emotional impact on the lives
of those who suffer with it. In some cases untreated acne has left patients
with permanent scars that must be treated. To avoid the embarrassment,
the pain, and the risk of scarring it is important to treat acne right
away.
How can lasers be used to treat acne?
Lasers can be used in the fight against acne because they can kill the
bacteria causing the acne and decrease the production of sebum (which
is produced by the sebaceous gland as a way of excreting oil) without
causing damage to the healthy skin around it.
By using lasers to treat acne you are fighting against all the sources
of acne while preserving your healthy skin and creating a clearer, smoother,
complexion. In a few short sessions your moderate to severe acne can be
a thing of the past.
What is a laser acne treatment like?
When you arrive for your appointment your doctor may apply a topical
anesthetic to help numb your skin. Many patients do not require this but
those who are sensitive to pain, or those with an active breakout, may
want to use it so the treatment will not be too painful. As your doctor
uses the laser hand-piece to direct the beam of light to the affected
areas you may notice a snapping sensation against your skin. Many people
describe this as being similar to a rubber band snapping.
The entire process is fast and easy, only taking approximately 10 minutes
to be completed. Your doctor will recommend that you apply sunscreen following
your treatment because your skin will now be much more sensitive to sunlight.
It is important to treat your skin gently and follow any directions given
by the doctor.
How many treatments will I need and how long will my results last?
Most patients require two to three treatments spaced three weeks apart
to see marked improvement (80% or better). Depending on how severe the
condition results will vary.
For most patients the results will last for a few months. Your doctor
may recommend a specific treatment schedule that will best fit your individual
needs, while maintaining your fantastic results.
Who is a candidate for Laser Acne treatment?
Anyone who suffers with moderate to severe acne is a candidate for laser
treatment. It can be used on men and women of all skin types and colors.
Women who are pregnant and patients with photo sensitivities should discuss
this with your doctor before receiving a laser acne treatment.

or anesthesia. However, some patients do experience a mild burning sensation
at specific laser treatment sites. Generally this sensation lasts only
a few seconds.
